Pat Mahomes Scores Big With New $500 Million Contract
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, is one of the hottest stars in the NFL, and it shows. Mahomes has just signed a 10-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, worth over $500 Million Dollars.
Mahomes, who at 24 has already won a Super Bowl, and has been voted the league’s MVP, has set a record as one of the youngest quarterbacks to land such a deal.
The extension of his contract, which had two years left, will keep him as the Chief’s quarterback until 2031, with him being only 35 on opening day.
Mahomes was clearly ecstatic about the extension, posting to his twitter account with the caption “Here to stay…!” The video included clips of the team and ending with the words, “We’re chasing a dynasty.”
News originally broke on the contract from ESPN, who reported that the contract was the largest in NFL history. According to Leigh Steinberg, Mahomes’ agent, the contract is estimated at $503 million dollars with $477 guaranteed. The deal also includes a no-trade clause.
The last time an NFL player signed a ten year extension was back in 2004 when Michael Vick, who was also 24, agreed to a $130 million dollar deal with the Atlanta Falcons, making him the highest paid player at the time.
The Chiefs are playing their hand well, understanding the value that Mahomes holds as a once in a generation talent. His athletic ability and star power can’t be replaced and good for the Chief’s brand when it comes to future recruits. This deal has agents on their heels seeking similar deals for their clients.
Mahomes has been working towards this since childhood. He’s been a lover sports since a young age. His father Pat Mahomes, is a former MLB pitcher, and the talent was passed on to the younger Pat who excelled in both baseball and football before giving up baseball in 2016 to focus solely on football with hopes of entering the NFL draft.
His dream came true in 2017, when the Kansas City Chiefs gave up the number 10 pick in the draft in order to secure Mahomes who was a star player for Texas Tech. He made some noise during his rookie season by throwing over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in 2018 helping the Chiefs advance to the division championship that season.
His career was catapulted once again this past season when he helped the team not only win the division title, but lead them to a Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.
Alongside his contract with the NFL, Mahomes also landed a shoe endorsement from Adidas which began in 2019.
